Advanced healthcare provisioning based on Future Internet technologies!

Nowadays, there is an increasing consensus that the impact of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) on healthcare organizations could be considerable due to the emergency of the Future Internet concept that is established over innovative technologies such as cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT). The FI-STAR project aims to implement the next generation of healthcare supporting applications by taking advantage of FIWARE state-of-the-art services. These are cloud applications and services for healthcare provision centred based on the needs of the patient and the healthcare professionals.

SimIC: Simulating the Inter-Cloud

‘Simulating the Inter-Cloud’ (SimIC) is a discrete event simulation toolkit based on the process oriented simulation package of SimJava. The SimIC aims of replicating an inter-cloud facility wherein multiple clouds collaborate with each other for distributing service requests with regards to the desired simulation setup. The package encompasses the fundamental entities of the inter-cloud meta-scheduling algorithm such as users, meta-brokers, local brokers, datacenters, hosts, hypervisors and virtual machines (VMs). Additionally, resource discovery and scheduling policies together with VMs allocation, re-scheduling and VM migration strategies are included as well. Using the SimIC a
modeler can design a fully dynamic inter-cloud setting wherein collaboration is founded on meta-scheduling inspired characteristics of distributed resource managers that exchange user requirements as driven events in real-time simulations. The SimIC aims of achieving interoperability, flexibility and service elasticity while at the same time introducing the notion of heterogeneity of multiple clouds’ configurations. In addition it accepts an optimization of a variety of selected performance criteria for a diversity of entities. The crucial factor of dynamics consideration has implemented by allowing reactive orchestration based on current workload of already executed heterogeneous user specifications. These are in the form of text files that the modeler can load in the toolkit and occurs in real-time at different simulation intervals. Finally, a unique request is scheduled for execution to an internal cloud datacenter host VM that is capable of performing the service contract.

An inter-cloud bridge system for heterogeneous cloud platforms

Over the years, more cloud computing systems have been developed providing flexible interfaces for inter-cloud interaction. This work approaches the concept of inter-cloud by utilizing APIs, open source specifications and exposed interfaces from cloud platforms such as OpenStack, OpenNebula and others. Despite other works in the area of inter-cloud, that are mainly resource management-centric, we focus on designing and developing a service-centric architecture. We implement an inter-cloud bridge system that is elastic, easy to be upgraded and managed. We develop a prototype composed not only from heterogeneous cloud platforms but also from independent cloud services. These are developed by different cloud service providers and offered as open source Software as a Service (SaaS). The proposed Inter-Cloud Mediation Service uses Future Internet SaaS such as a Context Broker for registrations and subscriptions to services and a Complex Event Processing engine for event management. We present an experimental analysis to show interactions with various heterogeneous cloud platforms and we evaluate the performance of inter-cloud services separately and as a whole.
